U-Sports Soccer Nationals (Pre-View)

The 2017 Canadian University Sports (formerly the Canadian Intra-University Sport (CIS)) Soccer Championships have been set. After a Championship weekend at the conference level, all the teams have been selected and are re-setting for the National Finals. The Men will be hosted by Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack in Kamloops BC while the women will be battling it out at the Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex in Winnipeg with the University of Manitoba Lady Bisons acting as hosts. To watch any of these games you can catch the webcasts at U-Sports Live.

Here are the participating teams followed by their regular season and playoff records.

On the Men’s side:

Check out the U-Sports Championship Men’s Soccer web page for detailed breakdowns about the teams, venues, ticket prices and schedule.

Canada West Champion: UBC Thunderbirds 10-4-1 / 3-0
Canada West Host: Thompson Rivers Wolfpack 6-3-6 / 2-1
OUA Champion: York Lions 13-2-1 / 2-0
OUA Finalist: Carleton Ravens 13-1-2 / 2-1
RSEQ Champions: Montreal Carabins 10-1-1 / 2-0
RSEQ Finalist: UQAM Citadins 7-4-1 / 1-1
AUS Champions: CBU Capers 11-0-1 / 2-0
AUS Finalist: UNB Varsity Reds 7-3-2 / 2-1

CanSportsOne Teams to watch:

  1. CBU Capers – Any time you go through an entire season without a loss, there has to be something special about your team. The Capers have never won a national championship and this year they plan on changing that.
  2. UBC Thunderbirds – This program knows how to win. Multiple national championships come with this team and they’re usually hard to push off the top of the mountain.

If these two teams end up playing each other, it will be in the championship game as the schedule keeps them apart until then.

On the Women’s side:

Check out the U-Sports Championship Women’s Soccer web page for details about the teams, venues, ticket prices and schedule.

RSEQ Champions: Laval Rouge et Or 12-0-2 / 2-0
Canada West Champions: Trinity West Spartans 10-3-1 / 3-0
OUA Champions: Guelph Gryphons 10-4-2 / 3-0
AUS Champions: CBU Capers 11-0-1 / 2-0
Canada West Finalist: Victoria Vikes 9-1-4 / 2-1
RSEQ Finalist: Montreal Carabins 10-0-4 / 1-1
Canada West Hosts: Manitoba Bisons 4-7-3 / 0-1
OUA Finalist: Western Mustangs 14-1-1 / 2-1

CanSportsOne Teams to watch:

  1. Laval Rouge et Or – They’re undefeated, defending champions and relentless in their preparation. They’ve been number one in the country from week one and until someone actually beats them, there’s no reason to believe otherwise.
  2. CBU Capers – Another undefeated team and, like their male counterparts from CBU, these Capers mean business and their business right now is a national championship. They’ve never won one before but if anyone can knock Laval from their perch, it could be these ladies.

Unfortunately, these two team’s can’t  meet in a championship game. If they do meet it will be in the semi-final as the schedule has them in a direct path prior to the championship game. As an outsider, I find it too bad the schedule couldn’t fall in line to make this a possible championship final.
