CHL Playoff Update

As of reporting this, in the QMJHL the Charlottetown Islanders fell to the Blainville Blois Armada 5-2, advancing the Armada into the 47th final round of the QMJHL President Cup. The Saint John Sea Dogs have a chance to eliminate the Chicoutimi Saguenéens on Sunday night. The Sea Dos are up in the series 3-2. The series comes to back to Centre Georges-Vézina giving Chicoutimi the home ice advantage, but there is no reason the Sea Dogs can’t close this out tomorrow night. The team has a roster of superstars including Nathan Noel, who was recently signed an entry-level contract with the Chicago Blackhawks.

Moving into the OHL, the Mississauga Steelheads have already clinched their final round position for the 84th J. Ross Robertson Cup with a 7-0 win against the Peterborough Petes on Wednesday. That leaves the Erie Otters and the Owen Sound Attack as the only teams left to compete in the 3rd round of the postseason. The teams play again tomorrow afternoon at 2pm EST with Erie leading 3-2 in the series. The game will be held at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre giving the Sound home ice advantage. Both of these teams are no strangers to each other and have been fairly evenly matched in the season. If these playoffs are any sign, it could be anyone’s series.

Finally, we’ll bring you up to speed with the WHL, the third round remains heated as the Regina Pats get set to take on the Lethbridge Hurricanes at the Enmax Centre. The defending Hurricanes are down a game in the series and hope to tie it up at home. Also coming to you Sunday night is the Seattle Thunderbirds taking on the home team the Kelowna Rockets. This action is happening in the Prospera Place and is another home team looking to even up the odds as they trail in their series 3-2 as well. This double header could decide the 51st Ed Chynoweth Cup’s final round teams and comes to you at 9pm PST.

Don’t forget to head to the CHL’s website and vote for the CIBC Showdown this week. Three great plays and three great players.

Just thought I’d throw in there if anyone missed the big finish by the U18 United States team capturing Gold against the Fins 4-2. Russia also grabbing a Bronze medal win against the Swedish team 3-0. Canada, unfortunately, did not advance to a medal round and ended up in 5th overall for the tournament.

That’s it for this week in CHL hockey.
